Search and rescue T he staff at Helping Up Mission in Baltimore realized a few years ago that they needed to add a search component to their res-cue mission: going out to the streets to find people in need of resources. They started a mobile outreach program, going out in a bus to offer a snack bag, a hot breakfast sandwich, coffee, and iced teaand to gain an opportunity to talk with people.The idea for a mobile outreach ministry started after the pandemic. There was resistance to come into facilities, shared Helping Up Mis-sions CEO Daniel Stoltzfus. Like many missions, we faced the need to grow our census. We needed to be much more proactive. We wanted to make sure people on the street knew how to get connected with us. The missions outreach director started going out in a van and bringing people back, whether for overnight shelter or to join the one-year recovery program. Daniel had worked with Austin Bonds in New York City doing mobile outreach, and he realized Helping Ups mobile work was growing into what Austin was doing with Metro Relief in Texas.
