Many more follow.1872With the aid of the president of the New York Stock Exchange, former inmate Jerry McAuley opens Helping Hand for Men on Water Street in New York City. It is the first rescue mission in America. 1877 Evangelist Dwight L. Moody calls on Christians to reach out tothe poor and broken. Under his influence, George and Sarah Clark start Pacific Garden Mission on Chicagos notorious Whiskey Row. 1881 Fanny Crosby starts serving at The Bowery Mission. She ultimatelyauthors more than 3,000 gospel hymns. Her song, Rescue the Perishing, becomes the theme song of rescue mission ministry. 1885 Jerry McAuley and his wife, Maria, a former prostitute, startMcAuleys Cremorne Mission on West 32nd Street in New York to help ladies of the night and soiled doves turn their lives around. \x04\x04\x04 1890 Mina Douglas and Eva Findlay are provided a vacant building inMontreal that once housed a brewery. They establish Old Brewery Mission, thought to be the oldest ministry of its kind in Canada.Missions Affiliate 1900s Missions use horsedrawn gospel wagonswith musicians and evangelists to take patrons from the crowded bars in redlight districts to their facilities. This gives rise to the term falling off the wagon. \x04\x04\x04 1903 Converted at Pacific Garden Mission, baseballplayer Billy Sunday is ordained. In his evangelistic crusades, in cities where there is no mission, he donates his last night offering for locals to start one. 1906 To bring accountability to this growing ministry genre, church and mission leaders meet at The Bowery Missions Christian Herald office to establish the National Federation of Gospel Missions.1913With The Salvation Army dropping out, the National Federation of Gospel Missions becomes the International Union of Gospel Missions (IUGM), with 29 mission superintendents as charter members.1914 After the sudden death of IUGM architect Sidney Whittemore, his widow, Emma, shares leadershipduties with Acting President John Hallimond until she becomes the first elected president.1914 The first IUGM annual convention and business meeting is held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Many of the100 participants arrive by train after spending weeks stopping and visiting missions along the way. 1919Clemme Ellis White becomes the first IUGM secretary (i.e., director) and publishes a quarterly newsletter and yearbook.
