b'A Discipline Emerges1940sGlobal conflict sees more women join the staff of missions as men go off to war. Many missions open Servicemens Centers. Returning soldiers and sailors show up at missions with undiagnosed PTSD.1943 Due to World War IIs commodity shortages and travel restrictions, IUGM foregoes holding an annual conference and business meeting for the first time since 1914. District conferences take its place.1946William W. E. Paul of Minneapolis writes the first edition of Romance of Rescue, a popular, detailed history of the movement. He later writes The Rescue Mission Manual and Miracles of Rescue. 1948 After several failed attempts to better staff IUGM, Chauncey Beeman becomes the first paid field secretary (i.e., director)but has to raise his support. He is only able to hold the position for one year.1949 Cliff Phillips opens FresnoRescue Mission and later sends out individuals with $1,000 of startup money to begin new worksresulting in 20plus missions in Arizona, Utah, Oregon, and Washington.1950s Churches begin to exit innercities as suburbs grow. Urban ministry, in many cases, is left to rescue missions and similar organizations. Many missions hold regular church services prior to meals. \x04\x04\x04 1950 The first episode of Unshackledairs from Pacific Garden Mission. It focuses on the life story of Billy Sunday. Unshackled remains the longest continuously running radio program in North America. 1952 IUGM launches and shepherds a new mission startup in Tokyo,Japan. Following WWII, there is a growing concern about people adversely affected in physically and financially devastated countries.1957 Ernest Tippett becomes the executive secretary(i.e., director) of IUGM. He serves five years, maintaining an office in Bridgeport, and later, Winona Lake.
