A donor to Los Angeles Mission started a fund that allows the mission to help people who are behind on their rent payments get caught up instead of being evicted, according to President and CEO Herb Smith. “We can make it a loan or a grant,” he says. “This is used primarily for those that do not qualify for other assistance.” Up north in Alaska, men who need low-cost housing can stay at Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission for between $265 and $400 per month, says Executive Director John LaMantia. “This has helped men who would otherwise of necessity continue to be on the ‘30-in-60-out’ cycle as nightly guests of the mission,” John says. “The men we serve are able to afford the monthly fee with the possibility of actually putting some money aside because they are able to dine at the mission.” At the Bowery Mission in New York City, peo- ple who struggle to find appropriate, affordable housing receive help doing so through the mission.
