Position Overview

The Chaplain position exists to deliver pastoral care and promote spiritual wellbeing to The City Mission’s program residents and staff. Position also provides crisis intervention and debriefing in situations of conflict, stress and trauma. This position is responsible for a) pastoral care within TCM programs; b) confidential listening, encouragement and support to TCM staff; c) chapel and other on-campus worship services, and d) church engagement within the local community. Position maintains a high degree of integrity and confidentiality within legal boundaries.

Essential Job Functions

Ministers to program residents, clients and guests spiritual needs and influences the campus culture by providing spiritual direction, biblical counsel and prayer support to those in the greatest need.
Maintains a regular schedule for program involvement. Works with program leaders to adjust as necessary.
Works to build healthy relationships with program residents, clients and guests.
Supports and encourages staff members with pastoral care (listening, praying, biblical counsel) as opportunities arise.
Works with program leadership to plan and implement spiritual formation initiatives through worship opportunities, devotionals, bible studies and trainings as appropriate for each program area.
Exercises a ministry of presence on the campus The City Mission campuses through staff visits, one-to-one appointments and impromptu calls.
Guides and coaches employees through times of transition, crisis, stress and change – corporately and personally with sensitivity and compassion.
Develops and implements strategies for spiritual and emotional interventions that promote a healthy workforce where employees are aligned with their role and consistent with The City Mission’s mission and core values.
Works to represent the mission at church and civic events for the purpose of building relationships through conversation, networking and event follow-up.
In collaboration with the Community Engagement Manager works to develop community-wide pastoral relationships and to build pathways for pastors to serve on at the The City Mission.
Professional Qualifications

Minimum Bachelor’s degree in theology, human resources, social science or related field; Master’s degree in Theology or Divinity preferred
Minimum five (5) years direct experience in ministry, chaplaincy or counseling required
Ministerial ordination by accredited institution required; Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) certification preferred
Proficient computer skills

General Qualifications

Committed Christian with a heart for the homeless and a desire to share the ministry of TCM with others
Adherence to sound biblical orthodox doctrine and demonstrated spiritual leadership experience
Sound discernment and wisdom in decision-making, conflict resolution and staff relations
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; professional public speaking abilities
Good networking and interpersonal skills; able to work with diverse groups of people and effectively communicate the heart of TCM
Highly ethical, trustworthy, and professional
Ability to maintain confidentiality and establish trust

Spiritual Qualifications

Professes Jesus as Lord and Savior
Believes the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, & ultimate authoritative Word of God (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21)
Patterns life after the example of Jesus and the commands and principles found in the Bible
Desires to serve the Lord in the ministry of rescue

Essential Physical and Mental Functions

Remains in a stationary position for approximately 40% of the time
Stand or walk for up 60% of the time on various surfaces (tile, concrete, carpet)
Climb stairs occasionally
Bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties including setting up video recording devices
Constantly operates a computer
Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public and co-workers
Constant use of hearing (correctable hearing to normal level required) to conduct interviews
Read, understand and clearly speak English; constantly use speech and hearing (correctable to normal level required) in communicating with public/co-workers, giving and receiving instructions, using phones
Work in various environments including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain or heat;
Constant mental alertness and attention to detail required while setting priorities and following up on assignments.
