Community Relations Coordinator


The Rescue Mission Alliance (RMA) is a Christian non-profit organization that has been serving the less fortunate in Southern California through emergency and long-term rehabilitation services since 1972. RMA partners with local churches to meet the spiritual needs of the people we serve. The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission (SFVRM) is a vital part of RMA that offers emergency shelter and homeless outreach to families, as well as a men’s drug and alcohol recovery program.


The Community Relations Coordinator is responsible for developing trust-based, sustainable relationships with donors and community partners, for the purpose of attracting, caring for, retaining and increasing their level of engagement and annual giving. This is a full-time, exempt position located in Northridge and reports to the Director of the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission. Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience, and includes benefits. This position is eligible for overtime and benefits according to applicable guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Community Relations

Build bridges into the community, providing opportunities for individuals, churches, corporations, and organizations to partner with SFVRM in providing funding, in-kind donations, and other essential items/resources to help fulfill its stated goals.
Develop and present to donors and sponsors compelling business proposals to secure long- term commitments.
Contact churches, civic groups, public and private schools throughout the San Fernando Valley asking their participation and support in caring for the needs of the homeless though various activities, as well as share the vision of SFVRM.
Identify, develop, and cultivate new relationships with churches, corporations, and foundations by communicating the vital work of the SFVRM and encouraging special event participation.
Attend public fairs and community events, promoting the services and function of the Mission.

Donor Development

Develop comprehensive strategies to acquire, cultivate and retain key donors, corporate sponsors and acquire grants to increase general funding to help resource the Mission.
Develop and implement methods of vision casting to inform key donors about the progress and performance of their contributions to SFVRM.
Contact donors, provide on-site tours, answer questions and request ongoing support of the Mission’s endeavors.
Work in close accord with the Mission Director to develop and manage special fundraising and “friend-raising” events.
Procure funding from local businesses and merchants to sponsor events for homeless guests, to raise awareness of the Missions efforts.
Coordinate press releases and communicate with local chamber of commerce and newspapers to facilitate advertising.
Reach out to donors whose support of the mission has lapsed in an effort to win them back.
Welcome new donors inviting them to tour the Mission, and answering any questions they might have.
Serve as the Mission’s point person for donor inquiries and represent the mission at donor networking events.
Actively monitor Raiser’s Edge donor database to collect and record notes and actions of donor interactions.
Provide the mission’s foundation relations officer with leads for grant funding opportunities.
Provide administrative support, including organizing meetings, setting up donor appointments and coordinating follow-up tasks.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Work as a team with other RMA employees to the greater good of the overall ministry.
Participate in applicable staff meetings, training sessions, and other SFVRM or RMA meetings.
Participate in SFVRM cross-ministry events.
Comply with and promote the RMA safety program.
Perform other related duties and projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position may oversee volunteers and special events as assigned by Director.


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
3-5 years related experience is preferred.
A solid Bible-based Christian faith, compatible with RMA’s statement of faith and active in a local church.
A flexible schedule, allowing participation in evening and weekend meetings and events.
Valid California driver’s license and insurable under RMA’s plan.


Excellent people skills; with proven ability to lead others.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong organizational, supervisory, conflict management and time management skills and the ability to balance a large group of diverse projects simultaneously.
A servant leader with a love for all people, and active in the local church.
Team player recognizing that in a mission one must wear many hats.
Self-starter who will take ownership of program responsibilities.


PC proficiency with Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
Raiser’s Edge (will train).

Physical Demands

This position requires extended times of work in an office environment in meetings and working at a desk and computer.
Extended driving to donor and community sites.
Must be able to sit for long periods, bend and lean over file drawers.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.


Basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, and printers.

Work Environment

Although this position functions to a large degree in an office environment, as a part of normal duties this position will be visiting facilities with an at-risk population where errant behavior and risk of infectious disease may be present, as well as commercial settings where medium duty equipment may be in use, such as forklifts and balers. Appropriate safety considerations will be required to avoid illness or injury.
